Macron cautions Trump on Syria

French President Emmanuel Macron, in a telephonic conversation has cautioned US President Donald Trump against the withdrawal of US soldiers from northern Syria. Macron emphasised on the necessity to prevent a re-emergence of the jihadist group Islamic State.

The French President pointed out that a troop pullout coupled with Turkey’s offensive against Kurds in Syria creates a conducive atmosphere for a resurgence of the Islamic State.

A statement from the French presidential palace declared that President Macron also held talks with Turkish President Erdogan and Iraqi counterpart Barham Saleh.

Several European capitals have expressed concern that the IS militants held by the Kurdish forces could escape and take advantage of the chaos in the region to regroup.
