The Tashigang hamlet situated at an altitude of 4650 metres is the highest village in Spiti Valley(Himachal Pradesh). It is also the highest polling station in the world. The road to Tashigang which remains closed due to snow almost the entire year is motorable only during summer months. This year however it would be opened early for polling. The Tashigang polling station serves a total of 48 voters from Tashigang and neighbouring Gete village. Elections in Himachal Pradesh would be held on March 19. A tourist lodge would serve as a polling booth in Tashigang.
Tashigang and most other regions of the Spiti Valley remain totally cut off from the rest of the country except for the peak summer months. Spiti which shares and 80 kilometer border with Tibet(under China) has a longstanding demand for a military cum Civil Aviation airstrip for or transportation, tourism, logistics and strategic purposes. Lack of air connectivity is hampering tourism in Spiti, there are few takers for a long and arduous road trip to reach Spiti, though in recent years it has been a popular destination for bikers. Spiti is one of the best destinations for viewing the an snow leopard and also for stargazing.
