Tawang is the Cleanest District in North East India

D.S.Mishra, Secretary, Government of India Ministry of Housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) after a visit to Tawang has declared the Arunachal district as the cleanest among all the districts in North East India. He also reconfirmed Tawang’s status as an Open Defacation Free(ODF) District.

Deputy Commissioner of Tawang Mr Sang Phuntsok held talks with Mishra and impressed upon him the need for a solid waste disposal management system and proper sewerage for Tawang.

Phuntsok established a direct co relation between improvement in cleanliness standards of Tawang and increase in tourist traffic.

Besides its breathtaking landscape Tawang is an important destination from the religious point of view. The Tawang Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in India and believed to be the largest in the world after Lhasa monastery.  Tawang has special significance for Tibetan Buddhists as it is the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama. Tawang town situated at an elevation of 3,048 meters witnesses snowfall every year.
