The US Congress passed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act, recognising human rights violations of the Uyghur ethnic community in China. The act proposes that the US addresses the mass detainment of over 10 lakh Uyghurs and other Muslim communities of China.
This latest move is likely to bring about a sharp reaction from China and the Act categorically calls for an end to the detention, torture and harassment of the Uyghur people by the Chinese authorities.
The Bill is an significant step in cornering China on its appalling human rights record in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Reports suggest that Chinese authorities have detained
more than one million Uyghurs and other other Muslims in so called ‘Vocational Training Centers’ and are employing them as forced labour.
